“Happiest moments are always such a mix of stuff, I don’t think I’ve ever feel like just happy or sad, it’s always a mix. Definitely that Nationals feeling, just getting on the plane for the first time to your first International and realizing that it’s really happening, that I’m actually going to go represent my country. Getting to wear the Canada jacket, that’s the biggest thing I would say. Other than dog’s dying, nothing else massive but it’s more of the day to day that’s the hardest sometimes. You have a bad day and that feels like the end of the world, but you wake up the next time, smile and it’s all right but I’d say the hardest part is the training days and all that stuff. Not that it’s bad, I think it’s a good thing there’s that challenge, there’s that hard aspect of it because that’s the fun of all of it. Also, keeping that sense of humor especially if it’s something that’s in your life, it’s easy to get too focused on your sport. I think a bit of obsession is healthy, it’s easy to get too obsessed sometimes and make that everything. Then when something happens and you do have a bad day, it feels like it’s the end of the world and it’s awful. You just have to remind yourself, it’s just 1 day, there’s so much more out there. Like this is my sport and I love it and I’ll give it my all but there is more to that in the end. Just relax a little bit and enjoy what you’re doing because you love it and you are having fun doing it so I think that’s the hardest part, making sure you don’t get too obsessed, to into it, you got to find that balance I think. “ – Nik Wamsteeker, Team Canada Ice Dancer.
