“Just because it’s not going to workout the first time, the second time even, you just got to keep trying. You always have to have that sense of hope no matter how many times you get beaten down a little bit, you just got to little fire enkindled.
Quitting that first time led me down some pretty dark paths. I thought like, okay what am I going to do with my life now? If skating is not there I’m not going to become a coach one day, I’m not going to travel the world that way or anything like that, so I started thinking about schools and all that. Then I realized I liked what skating was giving me, I liked that challenge and those hard days. It wasn’t just a simple, okay go to University, get a degree, get a job and all that stuff. Skating has that element of uncertainty, you don’t know what’s going to happen, you have to work for it. Like we have to qualify for competitions and I like that, I like that little bit of not risk I would say, but excitement. It’s more of an adventurous feeling you know. So that led me to always having that hope there.” – Nik Wamsteeker, Team Canada Ice Dancer. (4/7)
