“I almost quit few years ago. I was with one girl, we had a good career but I broke my collarbone and then I came back and wasn’t finding the same enjoyment in the sport as before. The partnership was fine, all the other stuff was fine but I was just going through a phase in my life where I wasn’t getting what I wanted out of the sport. So I left for a year, I tried rowing which I found very fun. It’s weird but for a little while there I started having dreams and I kept dreaming about skating, how it would feel like to skate in competition again. So I was like ‘oh maybe I am really missing this actually.’ I took that as a sign and went back. I skated with 1 girl for 1 year and then after that the partnership broke up. Then I found Haley and thought okay I’ll give it a another shot, I’ve come this far. After I quit for that first time then I came back I was like, ‘okay now I’m back, I got to give it all I can and see where I can take it.’ Luckily Haley and I worked out great, this has been the best partnership I’ve had yet. She’s my girlfriend so there’s a romantic aspect, she’s just very integral to my life nowadays, she’s like a pillar there. I can’t even think about what I would do if I didn’t have her at this point. We’ve had so much success so far, ups and downs of course but for the most part we’ll have a really really bright future if we pull our shit together.” – Nik Wamsteeker, Team Canada Ice Dancer. (3/7)
