“There’s people that have helped me with all different aspects of the field, but that being said I am so strongly a people oriented person that people who have shown me what it looks like to really be a leader in the people sense are the people that I think back on. There are 2 main people who have had the biggest influence to me. The first one is the director that came into my classroom when he was starting that program back in McMaster. That’s just because he is just the best damn person in the world, and he continues to do it day in, day out, put everything heart and soul into every little thing. You see his impact by how many people follow him wherever he goes and they just want to work for him because he’s that good. Not the smartest person in the world, not the best at anything really but he’s just a good guy. The other one is when one of my professors at Springfield. These are both people that directly educated me in this field but it’s because they had something special that I followed and I went to them to learn from. The professor at Springfield who is probably one of the most opinionated controversial type of people, will say anything. Will just do research on any topic, learn everything he can on it and then throw it in your face in the way that it’s meant to solicit some sort of debate or discourse which initially was really intimidating for me. I’m not somebody who is seeking a debate, I’m not out there to question your knowledge, I might shy away from that kind of thing naturally. So for me to have a character in my career development who helped me not to be afraid or intimidated by conversation. To actually do my research, feel confident in what I know and to frame that up and be able to say it in a lot of different contexts just in terms of that 1 skillset has probably got me further, more confident in my own career development than any other skillset than I’ve ever acquired. He’s an inflammatory person for sure, you are not going to go in wanting to be best friends with the guy but he taught me some really valuable things.” – Molly O’Brien, Director of Strength and Conditioning at Fortius Sport and Health.
