“I was inspired by Shawn Johnson growing up, she was always so motivational. Even now since she’s been retired, she continues to help and inspire youth. She’s always pushing people to be their best self, and inspiring many. She has always shown up ready to compete with a smile on her face! As well I grew up following the Canucks, Trevor Linden was one of my favorite players. I loved watching Trevor do amazing things both on and off the ice, he’s so kind hearted and is always doing so much for the community. So, when I was younger growing up he was always someone I looked up to. A big moment that has always stuck with me is when Rick Rypien passed, it was a really big movement in the hockey community. For me it was the turning point where I was like, ‘okay mental illness affects everyone.’ even professional athletes. A lot players stepped up such as Bieksa. He established mindcheck.ca which I’ve been a huge supporter of, it’s an amazing website. It has the resources that many need. I am grateful to all the athletes and people who have stepped forward and helped break the silence. every single one of them is inspirational ” – Michelle Huntley, Mental Health Advocate and Former Gymnast.
