“So I was at Ohio State for 3 years, didn’t play much, the most I would ever play in a game would be like 5 minutes. And I got about 12 games in 3 years, and looking at it on paper it was awful. Just feeling bad about myself. Then I realized, that doesn’t make me who I am. That’s not who Mercedes is, that doesn’t matter if I play 30 games or play 5, it doesn’t matter. So I think the realization when I came back in January of 2016, so very recently 2 years ago. And I got up, we did the fitness test and I said, ‘this isn’t for me, I’m not here mentally, Mercedes is not there, she’s checked out.’ So I think for me, the hardest thing is realizing, I was at my dream school and I had all my best friends there, all the athletes, my sister was there. Knowing I wasn’t enjoying myself and I wasn’t happy, and I was literally so depressed and so down was the hardest realization. That was the hardest time I’ve ever been through in my life. Choosing to come home was hard but it was the best decision for sure.” – Mercedes Hamilton, Former Division 1 Field Hockey Player. (4/8)
