“We were coming off a Junior World’s medal when I injured my ankle, so we were going into the season hoping to win. I put a huge amount of pressure on myself that year – we both did. Skating through injury was normal for me, but this one was different. We tried countless treatment options and any progress we saw would vanish as soon as I stepped on the ice. I trained until my ankle couldn’t take weight anymore and the only option was surgery. The months of skating in pain really took a toll on me mentally, and the mental healing can sometimes take longer than the physical healing. When it’s all happening, it seems like you’re losing a part of yourself. But once you get through it, you realize how much strength you’ve really gained. Physically of course, but mentally too. I’ve learned a lot about myself throughout the ups and downs, and I have much more confidence in what I can overcome.” – Madeline Edwards, 2014 Junior World’s Bronze Medalist in Ice Dance with Zhao Kai Pang.
