“I think the hardest thing is the disappointment of not meeting your expectations. One of my most disappointing races was my Junior World’s trials, some would say I should’ve won the C1 1000m at trials and I didn’t pull through, I didn’t have a very good race at all and it’s the worst feeling in the world, it’s awful. But as soon as I got home to the club, I was like let’s just go for Nationals, let’s refocus, let’s go and start training again, I didn’t take any break, I just went right back at it and that’s actually the same year I got my best result at Nationals, came 2nd in the C1 1000m behind Jason Mccombs. So I don’t know, you have disappointing results but you got to get yourself back in that mind frame, refocus and just get back at it. What I felt in that moment was the worst, it was just pure disappointment, like you finish the race and you’re like ‘what have I done’, I just let this opportunity slip by, like ‘could I have done better, I should’ve pushed harder’, it’s all about what you didn’t do other than what you’ve done, like I could’ve done ‘this’ or ‘this’, like ‘why didn’t I do that?’ My one advice is to just keep at it, if you like it just don’t give up. Especially after disappointing results, just put your head back in and GO. You just have to refocus, don’t let shame results get you down, you just do it because you love it, that’s the best thing and that’s what I’m enjoying right now. Like here is how I do, I’m here because I love it.” -Lukas Heztler, Canadian Canoer. (4/4)
