“In flying, there was a person of higher rank, older and basically the adult supervisor. He was very nice of giving instructions/tips in the 1st time I got my license, when the 2nd time came around he was out there to ‘sabotage?’ The word that they use is DND (cadet is under defense). We have a book of guideline, which is similar to the military and law. The word they use was harassment. The adult was harassing a cadet basically, a child. Verbally and emotionally, not physically. He would be telling other cadet inside information and try to exclude me out from everything. He excluded me out of everything, called me out on the little things or would makeup story that were not even true and tell my supervisors. He was doing these things, I don’t know why if it was out of jealousy or anything like that. So I always had doubts and was about to give up but I was like, ‘who is that person to define who I am.’ For a whole year I was struggling against this, I didn’t want to give up, but every step brought me 5 steps back because of this 1 person. It was following a military system for the fact that you have higher rank pushing down on a lower rank and obviously you would trust what a higher rank would say even though it was false. So I think it’s important to always persist. Persistence and believing in yourself.” – Larissa Chiu, Former Skier, Current UBC Student and Pilot. (2/3)
