“My worst moment is this last year in late October. Most of last year of 2016 I had a tiny tumour on my pancreas. It kept on shooting out insulin, so I would have really low blood sugar, it got to a point where I was having seizures. That trials I qualified for everything, for Worlds and I was by far the fastest but I couldn’t go, they thought it was too much of a risk so that was definitely really really hard for me and I ended up having surgery. That following 8 weeks I couldn’t do anything and I lost like 25 lbs, I couldn’t run as fast I could, lost all my muscle, any strength I had. When I started getting back into it, those were definitely the hardest months I’ve had in a long, long time. Whether athlete or not, my respect for anyone going through these kind of hardships has increased so much.” – Kenny Kasperbauer, American Canoer.
