“One of the proudest moments I’ve had recently was when I was coaching the basketball team at the school I coach at and one of our students on our team had Autism. Working with him and having him being part of that team was really rewarding. In the last game we were down by quite a few points and I played him the entire second half of the game, every single shift. People were originally trying to steal the ball away from him, trying to take advantage of him on the court but after realizing what he was trying to do, they were letting him trying to score, letting him take those open shots, letting him go closer to the basket and letting him score. That was really inspiring for me and a proud moment.
He really appreciated all his teammates, his teammates were really cheering him on. The teammates were actually getting upset at the other team for not letting him score and taking the ball away from him. He really enjoyed having that moment, and having all these people cheering him on because who knows in the future if he’s ever going to have that opportunity again or if he’s going to have that chance to be on that team and have those teammates like he had this year.” – Joey Balzer, Olympic Weightlifter.
