“Brady my C2 partner, started paddling a year after I did so we’ve known each other for a long time, we probably started training C2 back when we were like 12 so it’s been like 8 years. So we’ve been like on and off at some points, mix it up but we always just stuck with me in the front, him in the back and the best thing about it is the fact that we always know we have each other to go back with in C2, it’s not like 1 year Brady will just disappear, we both kind of committed so much to each other. I don’t think either of us will feel like racing for someone else.
When I went into trials I felt confident but didn’t really know if I was going to make it and since I didn’t make it for C1 1000m or C1 200m so we basically just had the C2. I remember we went into that race with the mindset that ‘we had to just go and make the team’, we weren’t even really thinking about racing at Worlds at that point, we were mostly thinking about racing to prove it to ourselves that we had a reason to go. When I was racing my C1 it felt more like ‘me’ trying to make Worlds then for C2 I was racing for my C2 partner, like we were both trying to pull each other through because we both wanted to make the team. We didn’t want to make it as ‘oh one of the Calgary’s guys got to go’, we wanted half the team to be from Calgary.” – Gavin Jaeger-Freeborn, Canadian Canoer. (2/4)
