“The distance I raced was taken out after the 2016 Olympics. At that point, I couldn’t see myself making the switch to a longer distance so, I decided it was time to stop. Unfortunately, I felt that there were a lot of things I still wanted to do. It was a very abrupt ending to my paddling career. I think a lot of high level athletes retire a little bitter at their sport. In these situations, I believe the club level plays a crucial role. Coaching or just being around young athletes doing the sport brings you back to the basics. It’s sport at its purest form. The only reason they are doing it is because it’s fun. It helped me remember that I do love canoeing and I wouldn’t have done things differently even if I had the chance.” – Cory Rublee, Former National Team Canoer, Provincial Development Coach for Canoe Kayak BC.
