“I’ve been paddling for 21 years, started in 1995 in the first few weeks of the 8th grade and quit same time the year in 2016 so I think that adds up to 21 years. 17-18 year of them on the National team, went to 4 Olympics, and whole bunch of World Championships in between so I’m proud of my career when I look back on it but you know, nothing will ever replace it and that’s something I got to stay mindful of, like nothing’s ever going to make me feel like that again but that doesn’t mean I can’t continue to be rewarded by my hard work and look forward to exciting challenges and opportunities. It’s just, it’s different. It was an exciting time of my life and I’ll always look back at it with a lot of warmth, pride and nostalgia. I’m still looking forward to the next challenge though.
In the last year, it’s been a lot different, sort of looking to navigate the difference between training and exercise a little bit, still very interested in exercising, not so much in training anymore so it’s been one challenge. I’m staying really kind of diverse, one of the reasons I’ve taken a bit of a step away from kayaking in the last 12 months is because I want to see what else is out there you know, I’ve spent so many years paddling in a straight line and loving it but I had a good opportunity to sort of diversify my portfolio work a little bit and it’s been rewarding.” – Adam Van Koeverden, Olympic and World Champion Kayaker, 4x Olympic Medalist, Multiple World Championship Medalist.
